CSIR-led low-carbon mining pilot

Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Technology and Digital MRV

Building a technical evidence base for mining decarbonisation through bench-scale hydrogen diesel dual-fuel engine evaluation and a customised digital emissions MRV system for small and medium mines.

Pilot overview

Linking technology evidence with credible emissions data.

The CSIR pilot brings together two connected work areas. The first evaluates hydrogen diesel dual-fuel internal combustion engines for mining applications, including hydrogen substitution rates, engine performance, operational limits and exhaust emissions.

The second adapts the CSIR's existing GHG Data Observatory for mining operations, defining user requirements and emissions boundaries before integrating available Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 data into a customised digital MRV platform.

What this pilot is designed to support
Engine performance evidence, a mining-specific digital MRV platform, value-chain emissions assessment and practical techno-economic pathways for future demonstration and scale-up.
Areas of focus

Four components for low-carbon mining decisions.

Focus 01

Engine performance evaluation

Defining mining load profiles, then testing H2-DDF substitution, combustion and emissions on research and C18 engines.

Focus 02

Digital mining MRV

Customising the CSIR GHG Data Observatory and defining data requirements for Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions.

Focus 03

Techno-economic assessment

Combining engine and emissions evidence with scenario modelling, cost-benefit analysis and business-case development.

Focus 04

Pathways to scale

Engaging mining and technology stakeholders to validate findings and identify partnerships for scaling.

Delivery approach

From scoping to a validated scale-up pathway.

Phase 01

Scope

Select relevant mining use cases, define load profiles and identify a suitable small or medium mine.

Phase 02

Evaluate engines

Undertake bench-scale H2-DDF testing and analyse performance, fuel substitution and emissions.

Phase 03

Customise MRV

Define emissions boundaries, assess the value chain and integrate available GHG data into the platform.

Phase 04

Assess and validate

Develop techno-economic scenarios, a mining business case and a stakeholder-validated route to scale.
